Union County Kwanzaa Celebration Kicks Off Joyfully
Staff Report / cranfordlocal.org
**Union County Celebrates the Start of Kwanzaa**
Union County Commissioner Rebecca L. Williams and the Union County Board of County Commissioners extended warm wishes to all residents as they marked the beginning of Kwanzaa. The celebration, rooted in African heritage and integral to African-American culture, runs annually from December 26 to January 1.
Kwanzaa emphasizes unity, culture, and community, with families and communities gathering to honor ancestors, strengthen bonds, and celebrate with a communal feast. Each of the seven days focuses on one of the Seven Principles, or "Nguzo Saba," meant to uplift and empower the African-American community.
The first principle, **Umoja**, represents **Unity**—a value that Union County seeks to embody daily. As part of the observance, a candle is lit nightly to symbolize each of the seven principles, which include Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).
Residents are encouraged to reflect on these principles and their significance, joining in the joyous celebration of heritage and community. The Union County Board sent their heartfelt greetings, saying, "Wishing you a joyous first day of Kwanzaa!"
Happy Kwanzaa to all!
