**Columbus City Schools Recognizes Schools for Mid-Year Achievement in Reading and Math**
Columbus City Schools has highlighted the achievement of its elementary and alternative schools for their progress in reading and math based on the i-Ready assessment. A group of schools has been recognized for achieving 50% median progress toward typical growth targets for the 2024-2025 school year.

Scranton to host 14th Captain James R. Minicozzi Memorial Race
Scranton’s 14th annual Captain James R. Minicozzi Memorial Race, a 5K run/1-mile walk, is set for September 5, 2026, at 10 o’clock in the morning during La Festa Italiana in downtown Scranton, with preregistration online at RunSignUp (deadline August 25) and on-site registration from 8 to 9:30 in the morning at Linden Street and North Washington Avenue; online registration costs $25 and on-site is $35, with proceeds benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of NEPA and West Scranton High School scholarships.

Two-alarm Seattle Fremont duplex fire contained; no injuries reported.
SEATTLE — A two-alarm fire at a three-story duplex in the Fremont neighborhood drew about 90 firefighters after smoke and flames were reported on the roof at 2:29 p.m., with crews knocking down the blaze from a rooftop deck, rescuing one cat and reporting another missing, no injuries, and investigators saying the fire was accidental and likely caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

Linden Street Bridge closed in Scranton for $6.3 million overhaul
Scranton, Pa. — The Linden Street Bridge is closed through the end of 2026 for a $6.3 million overhaul, detouring about 4,500 daily vehicles along 7th Avenue to Lackawanna Avenue while pedestrians can still cross on the sidewalk, according to PennDOT.

Meter Upgrade Underway in Apex; Phase II Begins Oct. 2025
APEX, N.C. — The town’s Meter System Upgrade to replace most electric meters is underway, Phase 2 is set to begin in October 2025, crews are working in multiple neighborhoods, meters are outdoors so residents don’t need to be home and swaps may cause a brief power loss, Phase 1 is complete, and a new customer portal with detailed usage data is scheduled for summer 2025 with access requests via the town’s online form.
