Columbus Volunteers Install 144 Smoke Alarms

On Saturday, March 29, 2025, teams of volunteers, including employees of Columbia Gas of Ohio, the American Red Cross Central & Southern Ohio Region, and Columbus Fire, took part in a National Sound the Alarm smoke alarm drive in Columbus, Ohio. The crews canvassed neighborhoods near the Linden Community Center for over four hours, visiting more than 320 houses and entering 63 homes. They installed 144 smoke alarms and provided fire safety information to 199 residents.

The smoke alarms, donated by the American Red Cross, have been installed by Columbus Firefighters since the Sound the Alarm Program began in 2014. In 2024, the Columbus Division of Fire and Fire Protection Bureau installed over 1,000 donated smoke alarms. Volunteers shared safety tips including advice on creating alternative escape routes and setting a family meeting place outside the house.

Residents who missed the event can call the Columbus Division of Fire Smoke Alarm Hotline at 614-724-0935 to schedule a visit. Photos from the event have been added by the Columbus Division of Fire.
