NWS Warns of Heat, Fire Risk in NM

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a weather update stating that hot, dry, and breezy conditions will continue across many areas until Saturday, which may lead to dangerous fire growth in northwest New Mexico. Beginning on Sunday, a significant surge of monsoon moisture is expected to move north into the region, bringing an increase in storms and heavy rainfall from Monday through Wednesday.

A hazardous heat warning has been issued for Friday from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM MDT. Most lower elevation locations in central and western New Mexico will face moderate heat risk, while Rio Grande and northern Union County are under spotty major heat risk. The moderate heat risk is notable for those sensitive to heat, individuals without effective cooling, or proper hydration. The major heat risk is a concern for anyone lacking effective cooling or adequate hydration, with potential impacts on health systems, heat-sensitive industries, and infrastructure.

The information was updated on June 19, 2025, and further details can be found on the National Weather Service website or by following @NWSAlbuquerque.
