Youngest Member Sworn into Linden Board of Education
Staff Report / Lindenlocal.org
Maryam Elweshahy has officially taken her seat as the youngest member of the Linden Board of Education in New Jersey. The 24-year-old, a 2019 graduate of Linden High School, was sworn in by Mayor Derek Armstead during the board's public meeting on October 17.
Elweshahy fills the vacancy left by Daynara Rosado Quezada, who resigned in August. Her term will run until December 31, 2025. She was selected from a group of eight candidates and her appointment was unanimously confirmed by the board in September.
At the meeting, Elweshahy took her oath with her hand on a copy of the Quran held by her sister, Hagr. Both of her parents, Egyptian immigrants, were present to support her as she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve on the board. Elweshahy emphasized her commitment to improving the educational experience for all students in the district.
“I promise to dedicate myself to the work and effort behind every decision that impacts our students—whether it be physically, mentally, emotionally, or academically,” she stated.
Elweshahy holds a degree in bio pre-med from Rutgers University and currently works as a pharmacy technician in Linden. She cited education as a privilege and acknowledged her parents' sacrifices to ensure her and her siblings' education. She also expressed pride in her sister Hagr's achievement of earning a full scholarship to Princeton University.
Hagr Elweshahy spoke about her sister’s influence, calling her a role model and highlighting her dedication to uplifting others. Mayor Armstead noted Elweshahy's role as a representation of the younger generation leading the way for the future of Linden's education.
Elweshahy's appointment brings the board back to its full nine-member capacity, alongside new student advocate Sheyla Caly. Current board members include President Dr. Marlene Berghammer, Vice President Malaysia Thomas, and five others.
